Brussels, 29 July 2008 - Caritas Europa is satisfied with the result of the participants' final evaluation of the Summer University 2008. This was the first time that Caritas Europa organised a Summer University. The event took place in the city of Leuven (Belgium) on 14-18 July 2008, in collaboration with Caritas Flanders and the Catholic University of Leuven. The Caritas Europa Summer University was a response to its member organisations’ demand for further opportunities to keep enhancing their skills in view to effectively participate in the Caritas Europa INCLUSION (Integrating and Nourishing Caritas Learning and Understanding of Social Inclusion through Optimal Networking) programme, in the frame of the European Community Programme PROGRESS. |
The Caritas Europa INCLUSION Summer University |
The five-day event included a series of lectures frome experts of the Caritas Europa network. These covered relevant EU topics (i.e. Lisbon Strategy, Active Inclusion, National Reform Programmes, Integrated Guidelines for Growth and Jobs); possible solutions to specific conditions in Member States in application of the Caritas Europa Basic Principles for a Sustainable Social System (Flexicurity, Social security systems, Welfare); and guidelines on how to get engaged in advocacy work towards governments and the European Institutions (Report and contribution methodology).
The theory was combined with a series of workshops and educational visits to the European Parliament, European Commission, and the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (COMECE).During their visit at the European Parliament, participants met MEP Jacek Protasiewicz, who gave an overview about parliamentary activities, and participated in an informal discussion on issues related to social policy at the European level.
At the European Commission (DG Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities) the group attended a presentation on the European Social Fund intervention in the context of the National Social Reform on Social Protection and Social Inclusion.
Caritas Europa is confident that participants’ newly acquired and reinforced knowledge will spread out through the network of its member organisations in order to better represent the interest of those suffering of poverty and social exclusion.

Note to editors
The INCLUSION programme is supported by the European Community Programme for Employment and Social Solidarity (2007-2013). The programme was established to financially support the implementation of the objectives of the European Union in the employment and social affairs area, as set out in the Social Agenda, and thereby contribute to the achievement of the Lisbon Strategy goals in these fields.
The seven-year Programme targets all stakeholders who can help shape the development of appropriate and effective employment and social legislation and policies, across the EU-27, EFTA and EU candidate and pre-candidate countries.
To that effect, PROGRESS purports at: providing analysis and policy advice on employment, social solidarity and gender equality policy areas; monitoring and reporting on the implementation of EU legislation and policies in employment, social solidarity and gender equality policy areas; promoting policy transfer, learning and support among Member States on EU objectives and priorities; and relaying the views of the stakeholders and society at large.
