European Parliament will adopt Written Declaration on ending street homelessness

Brussels, 10 April 2008 The Written Declaration on ending street homelessness by 2015 has reached the required number of MEPs signatures in time for adoption.

Caritas Europa, who has been supporting this initiative since its publication in December 2007, is very pleased with this outcome and congratulates the Members of the European Parliament for their proof of solidarity.

The organisation acknowledges the role of the European Federation of National Organisations working with the Homeless (FEANTSA), who was the initiator of the social NGOs’ supporting activities to reach the necessary number of signatures.

Caritas Europa also thanks the member organisations who, responding to its appeal, have contributed to the campaign. In particular,  Caritas Italy, Greece and Spain have being feeding back Caritas Europa with their progresses on advocacy at national level.

The initiative for this declaration was taken by a cross-party alliance of MEPs: Mary Lou MacDonald (GUE/NGL, Ireland); Claude Moraes (PES, United Kingdom); Jacek Protasiewicz (EPP-ED, Poland); Gérard Onesta (Greens/EFA, France); and Jean-Marie Beaupuy (ALDE, France).

For Caritas Europa the text is in accordance with the social teaching of the Church and is an important step to put an end to a serious violation of human rights in Europe.
