Brussels, 19 January 2010 - Today, the coalition of European social NGOs for the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion (EY2010) held a press conference to mark the launch of their activities for this year. The coalition, committed to the fate of the nearly 80 million people living below the poverty line in the EU, urges decision makers to work towards a "renewal of a common vision for the type of society we want to create. A commitment to building a Europe where women and men of all ages can live free of poverty and social exclusion, should be the legacy of the 2010 Year." Caritas works relentlessly towards the zero poverty target. It believes that poverty is everyone’s concern and that focusing on preventing poverty is the best way to fight it.
