Brussels, 19 August 2008 - Testimony from Caritas Georgia - As a result of the hostilities between Russia and Georgia, numerous internally displaced people (IDP) have escaped from the conflict region. Caritas Georgia has engaged itself in several actions in order to address this emergency. Recent figures from the United Nations talk about 130,000 people uprooted from their homes. 80,000 of them are currently located in Tbilisi and another estimated 50,000 spread throughout other regions of Georgia. Caritas Georgia was among the first organisations dealing with the IDP who arrived in the capital from the war-hit regions. Most of them have been accommodated in the buildings of different public institutions (schools, kindergartens, colleges etc) living in very spartan conditions.Caritas Georgia's General Director, Fr Witold Szulczynski, decided to start work immediately with Caritas Georgia's own resources while waiting for financial support from the Caritas network and partner organisations.
At present Caritas Georgia provides assistance to four IDP centers in Tbilisi. These are supplied with Caritas bread and baked production, and one of them has a soup kitchen that prepares meals for 350 people every day. The centers are equipped with first aid medicine, clothes, hygienic items, mattresses and bed linen.
Reports also mention about some 14 000 IDP from Abkhazia looking for shelter in west Georgia. To cope with their needs, Caritas Georgia has set up a bakery in the town of Kutaisi and plans to open a new soup kitchen in the area.
Furthermore, Caritas Georgia delivers psychological help to IDP children and youngsters, which is very important for the victims of the conflict. |
