European Caritas organisations support local partner's quake emergency response in China
|
Brussels, 19 May 2008 - Several European Caritas organisations are supporting the relief work of local partner Jinde Charities in the aftermath of China quake.
A terrible 7.8 Richter-scale earthquake hit the center of China on Monday 12 May. Shock waves were perceived thousands of kilometers away from the epicenter. Death toll is estimated at 34,000 people. Hundreds of thousands are injured and 5 million people have become homeless. The infrastructural damages are calculated in billion of dollars and affect a population of around 23 million people. Amid the enormous devastation caused by the quake, Jinde Charities is working restlessly to deliver aid to as many as possible. Caritas France (Secours Catholique) and Caritas Germany International have initially allocated €150,000 to support Jinde Charities’ relief work, while funds are being collected. Two relief workers from Caritas Germany International have arrived to China to integrate the 30 people big Jidde Charities’ rescue group that is working in the area. Other involved European Caritas organisations are Caritas Czech, Caritas Croatia, Caritas Austria and Caritas Italiana, which have launched fundraising campaigns. Reconstruction and relief needs will certainly last for several years. Therefore the Caritas network is intensifying its aid in the affected region. At the global level, Caritas Internationalis is channeling global Caritas aid to Caritas Hong Kong. |
