Brussels, 19 May 2008 - (update of article published on 16 May 08) - European Caritas organisations have responded massively to the emergency situation in Myanmar. The country has been devastated by the major cyclone Nargis on 2 May 2008. Estimations talk about more than 2,5 million people in urgent need of help, and around 200,000 dead and missing.Caritas organisations across Europe launched immediately their emergency response mechanisms, including the setting up of urgent fund collection campaigns. Some organisations allocated different amounts of money immediately. Caritas France (Secours Catholique) - €50,000; Caritas Denmark - €35,000; and Caritas Czech - €10,000. Caritas Germany International joined Caritas Luxemburg and Caritas Switzerland and raked up €150,000. Caritas Ireland (Trócaire) announced the launch of a €1,000,000 relief programme. |

On 18 May 2008, Caritas Switzerland announced that the organisation is going to rise its initial help from CHF 200,000 to CHF 600,000 (around €400,000).
Caritas Poland informed on 19 May 2008 that it is preparing a project to build homes for 350 families affected by the cyclone. This same day, Caritas Internationalis announced that the global Caritas response is securing the delivery of relief to 60,000 people.
Other engaged member organisations are Caritas in Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia, England and Wales (CAFOD), Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Scotland, Slovenia, and Spain.
The network is distributing its help through the Caritas global network to local Church partners in Myanmar, which are delivering aid to 10,000 people in Yangon and the region of the Irrawady delta.
Two weeks on, the situation in the country is still unclear and confused. The Myanmar governing junta is reluctant to allow foreign journalists to enter the country, and limits the actions of international aid.
Meanwhile, people are still waiting for help that does not seem to arrive. Victims are trying to survive, among chaos and devastation, from starvation and the lurking diseases.

A staff member, who prefers to speak anonymously, depicts the situation: “People have no drinking water or food or shelter. Children are eating coconut shells. Dead animals are everywhere. There is a terrible smell. There were many refugees, living in roofless churches and monasteries. Help has not reached them. We are doing what is possible. In the last two days, we have reached out to the starving people.”
Reports of new torrential storms lashing the region are deepening the misery of Nargis’ survivors, as well as hampering all emergency response.
