European Caritas organisations help Caritas Cameroon to cope with Chadian refugee wave

Brussels, 12 February 2008 - Fights between the government's army and rebel factions in Chad have forced thousands of people to flee for their life. Almost 50,000 have crossed the border into neighbouring Cameroon. Most of them are arriving to the northern districts of  Makari, Kousseri, and Logone Birni.

In the district of Kousseri, about 7,000 people have found temporary shelter in the buildings of the Catholic school, the parish and its medical center. Caritas Cameroon has constructed an emergency center in the area and has rapidly started to deliver basic needs, such as food and clothes.

To avoid any spread of diseases, the team of Caritas Cameroon has undertaken the building of basic infrastructures, such as latrines and wells of drink water. In addition to that, a sanitarian prevention plan is on its way as well.

European Caritas organisations are monitoring the evolving situation in Cameroon and Chad. Expertise assistance has already be sent while funds are being raised to further support the activity of Caritas Cameroon on the field.

More specifically, Caritas Netherlands (Cordaid) has already allocated € 50,000 to this crisis, while Caritas Germany International has guaranteed its support to Caritas Cameroon by sending a team of experts to the northern areas of the country. Caritas Spain is monitoring the actions of Caritas Cameroon and is ready to send its support as soon as a final emergency plan is presented. Finally, Caritas Italy has launched a fundraising campaign.
