Brussels, 8 February 2008 - Kenya is sinking into what seems to be an unstoppable spiral of violence. The political turmoil that is sweeping through the country since the last presidential elections has lead to the assassination of more than 1000 people, and compelled hundreds of thousands to leave their homes.
"The problem is that the people who are dying and are affected the worst by this situation are the poorest; losing their property, losing what little they had," says Fr. Daniele Moschetti, parish priest for Korogocho in Nairobi, who has witnessed the desperation of those trying to save their homes.
Many of them have found shelter in churches and parishes across the country. The Church and local Caritas organisations are currently confronted to an enormous relief work deployment with which they can hardly cope. The global Caritas network is working intensively to support their partners in the field. European Caritas organisations have started fund raising campaigns and have allocated thousands of euros to the Kenyan crisis. |

By the end of January the network launched a call for aid of 1,8 million to help victims in the Rift, as well as in the provinces of Nyanza and West.
This far, aid has been invested in psychological support, food supply, blankets, mosquito nets, kitchen wares, and transportations.
Amidst work in the field, the Caritas network has lobbied intensively towards the Kenyan government and population to support dialogue and cease the violence.
Directors and staff from Caritas members around the world, who have witnessed the horrors of war across the globe, signed a joint statement urging Kenyans to cease the violence.
A previously call for peace was sent on 24 January by Caritas Internationalis president Cardinal Óscar Rodríguez and the president of Caritas Africa Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.
