Caritas Europa and CIDSE on the impact of EU's Development Cooperation in the South

Brussel, 08 March 2007 - CIDSE and Caritas Europa will organise a roundtable debate at the European Parliament in Brussels on the occasion of the launch of their joint report: “The EU’s Footprint in the South”. The event, which is sponsored by MEP Alain Hutchinson, will take place on the 21 March 2007, 9:00-13:30.

The report examines the impact of European Community development cooperation on poverty reduction and draws upon available documentation as well as views of civil society and other local actors gained from research in Bangladesh, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Zambia.

The roundtable debate on the report's findings will bring together decision makers from the European Commission, the European Parliament, and Member States; civil society representatives from Europe and the South; and other interested parties. Discussions will focus on assessing the effectiveness and real impact of European Community aid on the lives of the poor in the South, and examining the contribution of new aid mechanisms such as budget support, issues of accountability and the role of civil society.

The "EU's Footprint in the South" report is part of the 2007 global CIDSE-Caritas Internationalis campaign "Make Aid Work-The World Can't Wait!"  Through this campaign, CIDSE and Caritas are working to mobilise public support for policy changes needed to make aid work in a way that supports poor countries and communities to make their own path out of poverty.
