Caritas Europa discuss migration and asylum with forthcoming Czech EU Presidency

Brussels, 08 December 2008 - A Caritas Europa delegation is meeting today the Czech Republic’s Ministry of Home Affairs and Director of the Department of Asylum and Migration Policy, Mr Tomas Haisman at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Prague.

The meeting is organised in the framework of the traditional advocacy work of Caritas Europa towards the successively forthcoming holders of the EU Presidency, also known as 'Troika meetings'. In January 2009, the Czech Republic will chair the EU Presidency taking over the lead of the EU agenda for the following six month.

Headed by the Caritas Europa Migration Officer, Mr Peter Verhaeghe, the delegation includes three members of the Caritas Europa Migration Commission as well as Mr Pavel Gruber and Ms Anna Macova from Caritas Czech Republic.

During the reunion with Mr Haisman Caritas Europa will present its positions and recommendations on four areas:

-         Labour migration

-         Integration of migrants

-         Irregular migration

-         Asylum and reception conditions

Further meetings with the Czech Republic Presidency will be scheduled later on to discuss topics related to the other working areas of Caritas Europa including social policy and development cooperation.

    

The Czech Republic will head the EU in January 2009

Note to editors

Troika meetings are held every 6 months with the forthcoming EU Presidency. After the Czech Republic Caritas Europa will be meeting the future Swedish EU Presidency in June 2009, and representatives of the Spanish EU Presidency in December 2009.
