Introducing Caritas Europa Advocacy and Communication

With its 48 Member Organisations in 44 European countries, Caritas Europa represents a considerable wealth of experience and expertise, which needs to be used effectively. Good advocacy and communications can help add value to this quality. They are essential conditions for consolidating exchanges within the network and better relating to the external environment.

Priority VI of the Caritas Europa Strategy 2005-2010, introduces Advocacy and Communications as follows.

I. Advocacy
Caritas Europa facilitates effective and appropriate advocacy on the issues at the core of the strategic plan, striving to shape public policies in the areas of Caritas Europa competence.
Caritas Europa bases its advocacy work firmly on the practical Caritas experience of the Member Organisations and feeds back, through the capillary network, these advocacy positions to the level of the practical Caritas work with the poor.

II. Communications
Caritas Europa facilitates communications, meetings and exchange of information, best practices and internal policies within the Caritas Europa network.
Caritas Europa facilitates communications and exchange with external audiences with special emphasis on decision-making bodies and the media in order to bear witness of the Caritas work with the poor and to give emphasis to Caritas positions.

According to the Caritas Europa Strategy, Advocacy and Communications entail the following specific goals:

I. Advocacy

  • To implement an advocacy strategy
  • To build advocacy capacity and expertise

II. Communications

  • To create a common Caritas Europa communications culture that contributes to a situation where joint reflection feeds into Caritas activity and where Caritas action feeds into its reflection
  • To promote and achieve optimal integration of modern communications technology into the Caritas Europa work throughout the network
  • To review and update, by 2007, the Caritas Europa Communications Strategy paper ’Roads are made by walking’
  • To develop, at the level of Caritas Europa and at the level of its Member Organisations, a clear common ’corporate identity’

Advocay and Communication activities currently aim at fulfilling the strategic goals and objectives of the Caritas Europa Strategy 2005-2010 with special focus on the implementation of the strategy ’Advocacy’The other side of the coin’ as well as on the process of reviewing and updating the Communication Strategy paper ’Roads Are Made by Walking’
