Future Without Hunger: Kofi Annan and Kristalina Georgieva address a Caritas Congress on global hunger and food security

Kofi Annan, UN former secretary general, will be a key-note speaker at a high level congress Caritas is preparing on global hunger and sustainable food security in Vienna on 1-2 June 2012.

Brussels, 03 April 2012 - The Congress “Future Without Hunger” will take place in Vienna, Austria, on 1-2 June this year. It is organised jointly by Caritas Austria, Caritas Internationalis and Caritas Europa, and will take a thorough look at current developments in food security, global trade and hunger disasters.

Fed up with hunger

Worldwide 925 million people go hungry every day and 7,000 children die from hunger and malnutrition.

Hunger is not a natural phenomenon; it has social, economic and political causes. It is a global tragedy, the biggest drama is the fact that it chould be avoided. It is time to put an end to this scandal. Let us meet this challenge.

This high level Congress includes speakers 31 experts from 19 countries, including key-note speakers Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General, and Kristalina Georgieva, EU Commissioner on International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response.

Other speaker include representatives from Caritas organisations in Bangladesh, India, Senegal, Congo, Moldova and Austria, as well as the presidents of Caritas Internationalis and Caritas Europa.
